This article explains how to increase the frequency of temperature measurements on your Temperature sensor by adjusting the Heartbeat Interval and sampling settings in Studio.
Who is this article for?
Customers using Disruptive Technologies Temperature sensors who want to receive temperature readings more often than the default interval.
What do you need?
- Access to DT Studio or the API
Step-by-Step Instructions
To measure temperature more frequently, you need to adjust two settings: the Heartbeat Interval (how often data is sent to the cloud) and the Sampling Interval (how many measurements are taken between each data send). Follow these steps:
- Open DT Studio and navigate to your Temperature sensor.
- Find the Heartbeat Interval (HBI) setting. This controls how often data is sent to the cloud. Temperature sensors can be set to 5, 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes.
- Set the Heartbeat Interval to a shorter value (for example, 5 minutes) if you want data sent to the cloud more often.
- Adjust the Sampling Interval to control how many measurements are taken during each heartbeat. You can configure 1 to 30 samples per heartbeat, with the shortest measurement interval as low as every 30 seconds (depending on the HBI).
The table below shows the shortest possible measurement interval for each Heartbeat Interval setting:
| Heartbeat Interval (HBI) | Shortest Measurement Interval |
|---|---|
| 5 min | 30 sec |
| 15 min | 30 sec |
| 30 min | 60 sec |
| 45 min | 90 sec |
| 60 min | 120 sec |
You can modify the Heartbeat Interval directly in Studio for all sensor types. Most sensors have a minimum interval of 15 minutes. However, Temperature sensors can go as low as 5 minutes, and CO2 sensors can go as low as 2.5 minutes.
Troubleshooting / FAQ
Q: Do I really need to measure temperature more often than every 15 minutes?
A: In most real-world situations, temperature changes slowly. For example, when an air conditioner is set to a specific temperature, it can take an hour or more to heat or cool a room. During that time, even the default 15-minute interval will give you multiple data points to monitor the change. Consider whether a shorter interval is truly needed for your use case.
Q: What is the most frequent measurement I can get?
A: The most frequent measurement is every 30 seconds, which is available when you set the Heartbeat Interval to 5 or 15 minutes and configure the maximum number of samples per heartbeat.
Q: Will measuring more often affect battery life?
A: Shorter heartbeat intervals and more frequent sampling will use more battery. Choose the setting that balances your monitoring needs with the sensor's battery life.
