Disruptive Technologies sensors don't have built-in location tracking, but you can approximate their location using signal strength data from nearby Cloud Connectors. You can also use naming conventions and labels to keep track of where your sensors are placed.
Who is this article for?
Anyone who wants to know or track the physical location of their Disruptive Technologies sensors.
How to find the approximate location
To approximate the location of a sensor, try one of the options below:
- Check the Network Status Event: Every sensor periodically sends a Network Status Event that includes information about which Cloud Connectors can hear it and how strong the signal is.
- Compare signal strengths: The Cloud Connector receiving the strongest signal from the sensor is most likely the one closest to it. If you know where your Cloud Connectors are installed, you can use this to estimate the sensor's location roughly.
- Use labels and naming conventions: To make it easier to identify sensor locations at a glance, assign clear names and use Labels in DT Studio. For example, you might label sensors by room, floor, or building.
Troubleshooting / FAQ
Q: Can I get an exact GPS location for my sensor?
A: No. Disruptive Technologies sensors do not have GPS. You can only approximate the location by comparing signal strength to Cloud Connectors whose positions you already know.
Q: How accurate is the signal-strength-based location estimate?
A: It provides a rough estimate only. The sensor is most likely near the Cloud Connector that reports the strongest signal, but factors like walls, obstacles, and interference can affect accuracy.
