This guide shows how to install a DT sensor to measure the open/closed state and activity of a hinged door.
Who is this article for?
Anyone installing DT sensors to monitor door activity.
What do you need?
Which sensor should I use?
Use the Wireless Proximity Sensor if you need real-time monitoring of door open/close events with exact timestamps.
Use the Wireless Counting Proximity Sensor for doors with frequent use - it preserves battery life by counting events rather than streaming real-time status.
Steps
1. Install the sensor in the door frame
Place the sensor in the top part of the door frame on the opposite side of the hinge. This minimizes dust build-up and allows the sensor to detect slight door openings.
If the door frame is made of metal, place the sensor on the edge of the frame to optimize radio signal strength.
2. Verify the detection distance
The sensor can robustly detect objects up to 5 mm from its surface. If the gap between the sensor and door is too wide, use a spacer underneath the sensor.
Metal doors
When the door or door frame is made of metal, place the sensor on the edge of the frame to optimize radio signal strength.
Avoid condensation and ice
Do not install the sensor in a location where condensation or ice can form on it - this may trigger false detections. Also avoid placement where dust and dirt will accumulate on the sensor surface.
