This article explains the battery types used in Disruptive Technologies sensors and the shipping regulations we follow to ensure safe, compliant delivery to your location.
Who is this article for?
Customers who want to understand what type of batteries are inside their sensors, or who need battery shipping compliance details for their own logistics, customs, or safety documentation.
Battery types in our sensors
Different sensors use different battery types:
- CO2 sensors come with standard AA alkaline batteries.
- Motion sensors and Temperature Probe sensors come with AA lithium batteries.
- Door & Window sensors and Temperature & Humidity sensors come with lithium button cell batteries.
- Cloud Connectors do not use batteries at all.
For exact battery specifications, refer to the specific product datasheet for your sensor.
Shipping regulations we follow
Our lithium metal batteries are classified under UN 3091. Here is how we comply with shipping regulations for both land and air transport:
Air transport
We follow the International Air Transport Association's (IATA) Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) and the International Civil Aviation Organization's (ICAO) rules. Our shipments do not require dangerous goods labels or declarations. Specifically, we adhere to:
- Packaging Instruction PI 970 Section II for button cell batteries (see page 25)
- Packaging Instruction PI 967 for other lithium batteries (see page 25)
Button cells installed in equipment are exempt from labeling requirements, but all other IATA PI970 requirements still apply.
Land transport
For land transport, we follow Special Provision 188, which exempts certain packages from marking requirements.
Troubleshooting / FAQ
Q: Do I need a dangerous goods label or declaration for sensors shipped to me?
A: No. Our lithium batteries meet the criteria that exempt them from requiring dangerous goods labels or declarations for both air and land transport. We handle compliance on our end before shipping.
Q: Where can I find more detailed battery shipping documentation?
A: You can review these external resources for more details:
- International Air Transport Association's "Lithium Battery Guidance Document"
- FedEx Lithium Battery Shipping Guide
- DHL Battery Shipping Policy
-
UPS Battery Shipping Policy
Q: Do Cloud Connectors contain batteries?
A: No. Cloud Connectors do not use batteries, so no battery shipping regulations apply to them.
