How to deactivate sensors and Cloud Connectors

This article explains how to deactivate sensors and Cloud Connectors in Studio. When you deactivate a device, its subscription is removed and it stops sending data to Studio and the API.

Who is this article for?

This article is for anyone who needs to deactivate devices that are lost, damaged, no longer in use, or need to be transferred to another Studio Organization.

What do you need?

  • A user role of Project administrator or higher in Studio.

Good to know before deactivating

  • Deactivated devices are still visible in Studio for management, online status, and future reactivation.
  • Deactivated devices can be reactivated anytime as long as you have available subscriptions.
  • Only deactivated devices can be transferred to other Studio Organizations.
  • Deactivated sensors should be stored near online Cloud Connectors to preserve battery energy (unless the battery is disconnected).
  • Deactivated Cloud Connectors still function when connected to Ethernet.

How to deactivate your devices?

To deactivate sensors or Cloud Connectors in Studio, follow these steps:

  1. Open Studio.
  2. Select the Project that contains the devices you want to deactivate.
  3. Select Sensors & Cloud Connectors.
  4. Select the devices you want to deactivate and click Active/Deactivate.
  5. Review the information shown on screen.

You can also open the detailed view of any individual device to deactivate just that one device, without needing to select it from the list.

Troubleshooting / FAQ

Q: What happens to my data after I deactivate a device?
A: When you deactivate a device, it stops sending new data to Studio and the API. The data prior to the deactivation will remain accessible in Studio for 31 days without extended data storage. The device remains visible in Studio for management purposes, and you can reactivate it later if you have available subscriptions.

Q: Can I transfer a device to another Organization without deactivating it first?
A: No. Only deactivated devices can be transferred to other Studio Organizations. You must deactivate the device first, then transfer it.

Q: Will my deactivated sensor drain its battery?
A: To preserve battery energy, store deactivated sensors near an online Cloud Connector. If you cannot do this, consider disconnecting the battery.
